Apps
ARChon Packager
Android Police coverage: Chrome APK Packager Gets Booted From The Play Store, Re-Posted As ARChon Packager
The ARChon Packager is the rebranded version of Chrome APK Packager, a tool that makes it slightly easier to move Android apps over to your desktop for loading into stand-alone Chrome applications. You’ll still need ARChon on your desktop, laptop, or ChromeOS device, but with a little bit of elbow grease most Android apps will run at least somewhat well. A notable exception: apps that rely on Google Services don’t work, at least for the moment.
—
ARChon Packager (formerly Chrome APK Packager) is a convenient way to produce Chrome ARChon Custom Runtime packages directly from your phone. You can generate chrome packages from either APKs on your phones storage, or from apps installed on your phone (It will pull APK). Open the App, select an APK or App from list. App Name and package name are both pulled from the APK and put into the manifest.json file. Everything is then zipped together in a ChromeAPK folder on your phones storage.
Ready Contact List
Android Police coverage: Ready Contact List Leaves Beta To Pretty Up The Phone Part Of Your Phone
For all the shiny new visuals and animations, the Android dialer hasn’t changed much over the years. Ready Contact List is prepared to add some serious functionality (not to mention eye candy) to the phone part of your phone. In addition to a photo-focused contact list, the app will allow you to perform handy post-call actions like saving a number immediately to your contacts. The $3 “pro” version removes advertising and adds more themes and a predictive dialer.
—
A beautiful contact list experience just hit the Play Store. Ready helps you to make calls confidently by showing the recent history related to the caller while the phone is ringing. The app provides actionable follow-up shortcuts after hanging up, and a convenient way to save unknown contacts after calls. You can find everyone in one place: the main screen aggregates the call history and the favourites.
BASE Music Sensor
Android Police coverage: BASE Music Sensor Claims To Continuously ID Music In The Background Without Killing Your Battery
This app is basically magical. It purports to continually scan the background noise all around you for music, then automatically identify it with Shazam or Soundhound, alerting you when it’s found a match. That part isn’t magical: it also claims to do so without draining your battery immediately. Our own tests seem to bear this out. BASE builds a list of music that you’ve heard in the background, so you never have to rush to pull out your phone to find the song that’s playing.
—
BASE Music Sensor is a new approach for music discovery. Unlike other discovery and identifying music applications, BASE Music Sensor listens to music around you continuously, and when music you might like is played in the background, it wakes up your phone with the song’s info. You don’t need to actively listen or open a dedicated app, BASE Music Sensor does all of this for you. Sit back and relax, and BASE Music Sensor will do the music discovery for you.
MyScript Smart Note
Android Police coverage: MyScript Smart Note Uses Super-Smart Handwriting Recognition To Make Taking Notes A Breeze
If you have a Galaxy Note or similar device, you need to give MyScript Smart Note a try. In addition to impressive optical character recognition that beats anything else we’ve seen for Android, the software allows users to highlight and select written text as if it were digital. You can even search through one or more pages of notes via the included tools – a godsend for students who are ready to finally ditch the pen and paper. An impressive selection of supported languages are included in the app.
—
MyScript Smart Note is the only note-taking application that turns handwritten words into interactive text, making it easy to edit, search, and take action on your notes. Words and sentences can be quickly moved, split, joined, and erased by simple gestures. Searching for a word or sentences is simple, allowing handwritten notes to be managed with the same ease as any digital document. You can easily interact with words you have written (i.e. see the word definition).
WhoSampled
Android Police coverage: WhoSampled Brings ‘The World’s Largest And Richest Database Of Music DNA’ To Android
Prospective DJs, this app is for you. WhoSampled claims to be the largest database of music samples, remixes, and song covers, all submitted by users. It’s a great way to find that one bit of that song that you remember from that other song (that you can’t remember). Links to purchase songs from the usual suspects are included, and you can compare new tracks with their inspirations. A bunch of social features are included for the truly dedicated music sample enthusiast.
—
What remixes were made for this track? WhoSampled knows. WhoSampled is the music DNA discovery app that lets you explore the music connections in your music collection. Access the world’s largest database of sample-based music, cover songs and remixes, and discover who your favorite artists have sampled, or whether your favorite songs have been covered or remixed. It’s a truly essential music discovery tool for anyone into Hip Hop, Electronic/Dance music, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Funk, Classical or any other genre.
Shake
Android Police coverage: Shake Is A Mobile App That Handles Legal Mumbo Jumbo For Freelancers And Small Businesses
Freelancers are free spirits that don’t like to be tied down by the shackles of normal workplaces. That’s the stereotype, anyway – I’ve been a freelancer and a standard employee, and I gotta say, I like the regular paycheck. But no one likes wading through stacks of paperwork, which is where Shake comes in: it’s designed to let you use basic templates for the most common work contracts, then collect a legal signature right on your phone or tablet.
—
Shake combines the simplicity of a handshake with the security of a legal contract. Use Shake to quickly and easily create, sign and send legally binding agreements from your Android device. STEP 1 – Create. Choose from one of Shake’s contract templates or upload your own. Customize the document by answering a few easy questions. STEP 2 – Sign. Electronically sign your agreement on either your smartphone or tablet. STEP 3 – Send. Send your agreement to the other party for signature, or if you’re together, have them sign on-the-spot.
Commute: Traffic Report
Android Police coverage: MapQuest’s New ‘Commute: Traffic Report’ App Tells You When To Get Out The Door In The Morning
MapQuest is growing a bit less relevant these days, so the company is trying to bolster its image with targeted apps like Commute. This traffic-only app gives you estimates of how long you’ll have to spend hating the world on your trek to work depending on when you leave. It can even tell you when to leave to make sure you get there on time, and it provides the usual alternate route options if you just want to avoid traffic altogether.
—
Commute is the simplest app for information about your daily drive. Commute proactively monitors the road conditions along your route and alerts you to travel times and incidents so you know what to expect on your way to and from work. Enter some basic information about your commute and we’ll notify you 15 minutes prior to your scheduled departure with our informative notifications.
Squarespace Note
Android Police coverage: Squarespace Blog And Squarespace Note Apps Are Out Of Beta And Available For Everyone
If you’re looking for the simplest notation app in the world, or at least the simplest one that still syncs to cloud services, this is it. The Squarespace Note app has just one writing window, and it can only be augmented with photos. Swipe up to sync your note to Google Drive, Dropbox, Evernote, or Squarespace itself, and shake your phone to go into a darker “night” mode. Unlike the Blog app further down the list, no Squarespace account is required.
—
Squarespace Note helps anyone record their ideas on the fly. Writers, bloggers, and others can use the app to record inspiration and ideas as they happen; notes can be sent via e-mail, or synced with a range of popular services including Squarespace, Evernote, Dropbox, Google Drive, and more.
• One of the quickest ways to jot down ideas and reminders on an Android device.
• Sync your notes with e-mail, Squarespace, Evernote, Dropbox, and more.
• The lightweight mobile app immediately loads a blank canvas when it’s launched.
• Unbranded, black and white feel lets you concentrate on content, not presentation.
Adobe Creative Cloud (preview)
Android Police review: Adobe Releases Creative Cloud Preview For Android To View And Manage Cloud-Based Files (Including PSD And AI)
Strangely, you won’t have to pay a penny to use Adobe’s official Creative Cloud preview app on Android: just sign in with your CC ID and you can have at it, opening and viewing all kinds of files for all of Adobe’s design tools. Of course, viewing them is all you can do – if you actually want to edit something you’ll need a full PC and a subscription to Photoshop or the other pricey desktop applications in the Suite. At least you get a little bit of free storage for those files you can’t modify.
—
Adobe Creative Cloud for Android: Your work, your inspiration, your creativity, with you wherever you go. Part of your free membership, this app connects your mobile devices to the Creative Cloud and unlocks new tools in your favorite apps. It also allows you to browse and preview your PSD, AI and other design files stored in the cloud. Sign up for a free Adobe ID and start collaborating with your team immediately. The free Creative Cloud membership includes 2GB of cloud storage and trial access to every Adobe creative tool.
C Floating
We’ve seen a lot of takes on floating apps and buttons in the last few months, but C Floating might be the most useful yet. It takes the widgets that you already use and turns them into floating apps, launched from a hide-away menu and available from anywhere in Android. The windows are unobtrusive, and the basic app includes a few extras like RAM, CPU, and network readouts. A $2 upgrade unlocks unlimited shortcuts and widgets.
—
An intuitive multitasking solution which allows you to assign any of your favorite widgets to its individual »Floating Windowpane« along with statistical and monitoring tools such as RAM and battery stats. Each window floats on top of all other applications, allowing interaction with multiple applications at a time. Resize and position each individual floating window to your likings. Keep track of your favorite Shortcuts and Recent Applications and conveniently launch them through the Floating »Sidebars«, on top of any other application.
HeadsUp
Hey look, an appified version of the Heads Up notification feature buried in KitKat (and un-buried in Android L) for users who don’t have or want root access. Very cool.
—
HeadsUp is a fork of AcDisplay mainly focused on displaying notifications while your device is on. It will inform you about new notifications, while you’re browsing/gaming/watching movies, by showing a minimal, beautiful popup, allowing you to open them directly or perform an action.
- Great design and awesome performance;
- Translated to all of the most popular languages;
- Incredible level of stability;
- Completely open source;
- And more and more.
Weather Timeline – Forecast
We’re always up for a decent weather app, and this one has a unique presentation. In addition to the usual location-based reports, individual cities each have a timeline view that presents weather like a calendar’s agenda. The flat UI and bright contrasting colors won’t appeal to everyone, but for busy users who value legibility over razzle dazzle it could be a serious plus over the alternatives. Long-range forecasts are included, for what they’re worth.
—
Weather Timeline is a simple weather app that focuses on summarizing the next hour, the next 48 hours and the next week so you don’t have to. It presents the forecast in a timeline to help you quickly glance and digest the information and has a strong focus on color to outline the weather conditions. The app includes current weather alerts/warnings for your chosen locations and includes a time machine weather forecast so you can look at the forecast months, even years in advance or check what the weather was like several decades ago.
Croma
Designers of all disciplines should find something to like in Croma, an app that helps you create color palettes. Color collections can be created by selecting a single hue, importing a still photo, or editing a pre-existing collection. Palettes can be shared via almost any app with Android’s standard share menu, and Croma uses some impressive examples of Material Design formatting as well. A $3 pro upgrade lets you use more than four colors in a single design.
—
Croma is a an app to create and share palettes, built with simplicity in mind. Its design is inspired my Google’s material design.
It allows you to create palettes in three ways:
• by manually adding colours
• by extracting colours from an image
• by automatically creating palettes (complementary, split-complementary, analogous etc.) from a selected colour.
Loki Smart Unlock
Loki disables your phone’s PIN lock when you’re connected to either a trusted Wi-Fi network or a trusted Bluetooth device. When you get out of range of any of them, it re-enables the lock. Neat, handy, and safe, at least as long as you trust the people who are within 30 feet of you. Unfortunately, PIN is the only way to go for this method; password and pattern locks aren’t supported. Loki also won’t work on the Android L developer preview.
—
Are you annoyed at having to look at your lock screen and enter your PIN or password even when you are at home? Wished your smartphone would skip its lock screen in a safe area, connected to your home WiFi network or when it is paired with your Android Wear, Galaxy Gear or Pebble smart watch? Why not have it disable PIN or password when you are driving too? Loki does all of that.
Mozi
Mozi is one of several apps that aims to find some common ground in the schedules of you and your friends. The interface is impressively streamlined thanks to a radial collection of time blocks, and separate users can select which times will fit their needs or wants best. Basic calendar functionality and a social invitation system fleshes out the feature set.
—
Mozi gets people together. No more chaotic chat threads, spammed invites, or digging through everyone’s schedules to find a time that works. Mozi’s planning wheel makes finding common times quick and effortless. Just swipe your free times and Mozi compiles them all to find a time that works for the most people. Spend your time together instead of sweating the details.
MyVicePal
This app is designed as a sort of calorie counter… except that it counts alcohol as well. Put in your gender and weight, then each alcoholic drink as you down it, and it will tell you approximately how tipsy you are (and how many calories you’ve consumed). It’s basically using math to guess at your blood alcohol content. I wouldn’t trust it to gauge your actual level of sobriety, though – “this app said I was OK to drive” isn’t going to win over any cops.
—
MyVicePal was created because we wanted to be able to see how much we were drinking over time and to see if, through technology, we could control our drinking habits in a positive way (less binging, more fun, less regrets). MyVicePal makes it easy to track your drinking habits. Simply add each drink you have with our easy and beautiful app and we’ll show you your estimate blood alcohol content (BAC) level and how many calories you’re consuming.
Suggest Movie
This app isn’t the first one we’ve seen that purports to suggest movies for its users, but it’s simple and has a lot of variables. In addition to the usual database of movies, Suggest Movies lets you select a minimum aggregate rating, so you won’t see any stinkers in the results list. (Unless you want to, I suppose.) Theaters, home video, and streaming movies are covered, and links to the standard review sites are included as tabs on every entry.
—
Suggest Movie helps you discover fantastic movies with minimal effort. Suggest movie is an app that simply suggests a good movie for you to watch. You can specify the years, genre and minimum rating and it will suggest a movie for you to watch. When you can’t decide what to watch, you can get this app to recommend a movie for you to watch on the theater, DVD, or stream.
WalletUpâ„¢ by CreditCards.com
Apparently there are people who keep up with the winding and wheeling of credit card promotions in the same way that you follow Android news. It takes all sorts to make a world. For those people, WalletUp covers all of the credit card news and promos, and you can also connect your personal credit accounts to the app for some rudimentary credit and budget management. For a relatively pedestrian concept, WalletUp uses an impressively effective UI.
—
WalletUp from CreditCards.com is the best way to earn more rewards when you’re shopping. Stay up to date on the latest credit card news, figure out whether low interest, cash back or airline cards are best for you and improve your earnings. Enter details about what your wallet and we’ll help you find the best card each time to swipe to save money. You can optionally connect your credit card issuer to WalletUp and we’ll even help you manage credit limits, due dates, and more. We cover bonus offers, reward points, foreign transaction fees, and more.
Autodesk A360
This application lets you view (but not edit) 3D projects from AutoDesk’s various professional CAD modeling tools, plus a ton of other similar formats. Files can be imported from online services like AutoDesk or manually opened from your phone’s storage, and the app description says that “huge” project files (as CAD files tend to be) can be viewed even on mobile. A rudimentary comment and annotation system for files is also included.
—
Combining the best, most powerful viewing technology with beautiful design and a variety of tools, Autodesk A360 is the perfect solution for you to view and track your entire project’s data anytime, anywhere. A360 enables you to view huge 3D and 2D designs, easily track what’s happening on your project and collaborate with other members of the project directly from your mobile device. Thanks to the powerful A360 viewer, you’ll enjoy both a smooth navigation experience inside your models as well as an exceptionally beautiful viewing experience.
( OFFTIME ) – Life Unplugged.
Offtime is designed to more or less force you to relax and disconnect from the world. It’s structured much like the “do not disturb mode” included in various phones, but it actually blocks out everything on the scheduled times, including all calls and notifications. Whether this is useful for you probably depends on your regular load of stress. The app includes a “VIP” list that lets certain contacts get through no matter what. A basic usage meter tells you how much of your time other people are wasting.
—
( OFFTIME ) lets you create profiles that block your calls, texts, and notifications. You can even restrict access to any apps, so you can make sure you don’t get distracted and break free. Make exceptions for the people important to you, or send out custom auto-replies that let others know when you’re back on the grid. And you won’t miss a thing- check out the activity log for a comprehensive list of everything that happened while you were in your zone.
Ping â—
The developers of Ping don’t seem all that interested in telling you what it does. So I will: Ping is basically a more streamlined (and somewhat pretentious) version of the automatic website suggestions in Google Now. Go through the ultra-minimal interface, select your topics, and Ping will send you alerts when new web stories match your interest. Your mileage for the app’s usefulness, and your tolerance for the unconventional UI, may vary.
—
See for yourself.
GIF Image Animator
If you’re a serious GIF enthusiast, and yes, such people do exist, then you need this app. Its functionality is limited to a viewer, but you can control speed, background, image quality, and hardware acceleration to dig deeper into those Tumblr mainstays.
—
This GIF viewer allows you to open any type of Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) file even with errors or extremely huge. You can control the animation speed, toggle checkerboard background on/off, enable/disable anti-aliasing (for pixel art stuff), force hardware accelerated rendering and view debug informations about the input source. You must use a third-party file explorer and click on any GIF picture in order to use this software.
Tango Music Pix
Tango is a lot like Vine: short, intentional bits of images and sound made for sharing. But unlike Vine, there’s a much heavier emphasis on multimedia: users can throw in still photos (not videos) and music to their presentations before sharing to Twitter or Facebook. It’s basically a really fancy slideshow. The app still has some annoying limitations – you can only select one song and ten photos at a time. At least you’re not limited to your own music library.
—
Tell your story in 30 seconds with Tango Music Pix. Combine your favorite pictures and music into a beautiful, customized slideshow that you can easily share with your family and friends. Got a special experience that you want to share with the world? No matter if it’s an anniversary, a party, or an amazing vacation, Tango Music Pix make it easy for you. Simply mix your selected photos with your favorite song , and a 30-second slideshow is ready to share with your friends on Tango, Facebook, Twitter, or email.

Android Police coverage: Developer Joaomgcd Introduces An Optional AutoApps Subscription Providing Access To All Of His Tasker Plugins For $1.35 A Month
Joaomgcd is a developer who specializes in plugins (pre-packaged extensions) for the popular Tasker system. He’s introduced a subscription app that takes advantage of Google Play’s recurring payments option to provide all of those plugins for a reasonable $1.35 a month. The plugins are still available in individual editions on the Play Store, some free, some paid. Subscribers get exclusive access to alpha versions of new and existing plugins.
—

AutoApps provides access to all 20+ Auto-plugins for $1.35/mo as well as exclusive access to Alpha apps not yet ready for primetime, like AutoXBMC and AutoYouTube
Manufacturer And Tie-In Apps
HTC Scribble
Android Police coverage: HTC Publishes Its Scribble Notebook App In The Google Play Store
Scribble is HTC’s official take on a notation app, which debuted with the relatively huge HTC One Max. It’s your basic draw stuff, write stuff, save stuff app, though it does have a few tricks up its sleeve with calendar integration and stylus support. (None of HTC’s Android devices include a stylus, but you can buy one separately.) A few “artistic” themes and templates flesh out the app. Only certain members of the HTC One family get in.
—
Want to make a page for your digital scrapbook or create interesting photos to share on your blog or social network? With ready-to-use templates in Scribble, you can get artistic and combine photos, text, and illustrations in a note. Your note can even display a bit of life when you include an animated gif. You can also add HTC Zoe photos. Your friend’s birthday coming up? Create a greeting card and link it to your friend’s birthday in Calendar. When you receive a reminder, you can send your wishes in a few taps.
AR fun
Android Police coverage: [lolwut] Sony Adds Three New Xperia Apps To The Play Store So You Can Add Ninjas And Stuff To Your Photos
Um. What? Sony released a trio of apps focusing on its celebrated camera system, all of which are allegedly “fun” and none of which are useful. This one features “augmented reality” in that it lets you insert 3D WordArt and fruit into photos and videos. For some reason. This one is only for some Sony devices, thank goodness.
—
Have fun with AR (Augmented Reality) objects. AR fun lets you create funny and interesting pictures and videos. You can doodle your thoughts in the 3D augmented reality space or throw objects like paintballs and buckets on faces in the viewfinder. Create memorable pictures and videos playing virtual pranks on your friends, or on cute little elves and see how they respond.
Sticker creator
Stickers? Really, Sony? I thought you had some dignity. This one is also limited to some Sony hardware.
—
Create amazing photos with your own personalized stickers. Sticker creator app lets you create your own personalized stickers right from your viewfinder or from existing photos you have on your phone. Import your personal stickers to your viewfinder and decorate your photos while taking pictures with your Xperia camera.
Ninja
Admit it, Sony. Now you’re just screwing with us. Strangely, this camera add-on that imports ninjas into your photos can be installed on non-Sony phones… it just won’t do anything once it’s there.
—
Add Ninja theme content to AR (Augmented Reality) effects when you take pictures and shoot videos. You can add the Ninja theme content to Xperia AR effect application. Transform yourself into a Ninja with the Ninja hood, see their legendary abilities like swordsmanship, skill with caltrops, water techniques and more. Transport yourself to the old mythical Ninja era and create memorable photos and videos.
Squarespace Blog
Android Police coverage: Squarespace Blog And Squarespace Note Apps Are Out Of Beta And Available For Everyone
This app is a replacement for Squarespace’s somewhat antiquated blogging platform tie-in, which has subsequently been removed from the Play Store. The new app is simply titled “Blog,” and that’s not the only thing that’s simple about it. Despite the minimalist interface, the app allows Squarespace subscribers to write and edit blog posts and moderate comments (but not modify the site design). A paid or trial account is necessary.
—
The beauty and power of Squarespace in your hand. Designed for Android phones & tablets, Squarespace Blog gives you the tools you need to write and edit posts and manage comments on multiple Squarespace websites. Writing blog posts has never been better. Use Squarespace Blog to create and edit posts using LayoutEngine or markdown. Easily add and layout photos, format text, and create links without knowing HTML. Save drafts, queue posts, tag items, and more.
Coin
Android Police coverage: Coin Electronic Credit Card Releases Its Official Android App, But Pre-Order Customers Are Still Pissed
Customers are really ticked at Coin’s late and limited hardware beta, and they’re not holding back in the official app’s review section. The app itself manages the electronic credit card by letting you load up old cards and set the tap code that switches between them. But if you didn’t grab one of the tiny amount of beta backer slots reserved for Android (we’re talking less than 5,000 here), that probably isn’t very comforting.
—
All your cards. One app. The Coin App stores all of your plastic cards, including credit, debit, gift, membership, loyalty cards and more. Use the Coin App with a Coin Device (https://onlycoin.com) and be ready to swipe any card, any time. DS note
Android Police coverage: Synology Releases The Public DiskStation Manager 5.1 Beta, A New DS Note App, And A Ton Of Android App Updates
Synology has a metric ton of support apps for its collection of Network Attached Storage hardware. The latest addition to the portfolio is DS Note, a collection a features lifted from apps like Google Drive, Evernote, and Google Keep. Since all of the various notes are saved to your personal storage hardware, you get a lot more control over who can access it on the “personal cloud.” Naturally you’ll need a Synology device to use the free app.
—

MediaStory Mobile
Cyberlink’s MediaStory Mobile isn’t any thing special, at least if you’re used to getting your phone’s photos onto Dropbox or Google Drive automatically. But if you use the desktop application for editing and slideshows, this app will let you sync photos with the program automatically. It’s kind of like a better version of the old Microsoft PhotoStory.
—
MediaStory Mobile makes getting photos and videos off your mobile device and onto your PC, fast and easy. Once onto your PC, the MediaStory desktop application can quickly turn your media files into memorable stories. Optimization with the latest Intel® hardware ensures transferring or syncing your media collection directly to your PC is blazingly fast, or you can upload, sync and share your media via the cloud with OneDrive’s cloud storage service.
Live Wallpapers
Space Free 3D Live Wallpaper
Choose between Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and/or switch on/off ISS, Hubble, Challenger or even UFOs (in the Pro version). Quickly go to settings by either double tapping the screen (you can turn this feature off), or by going in the app drawer. Simulate swipe is handy for Samsung TouchWiz as this launcher doesn’t allow parallax.
- The planets or moons with atmosphere scatter the light at sunrise/sunset.
- Earth’s cloud maps are dynamic. Not only they rotate with the planet, but their shape is changed over time.
- Some of the moons produce eclipses on the planets (and vice versa).
