Dropbox Goes Straight For Google Drive’s Throat: 1TB Of Storage For $9.99 A Month Or $99 A Year, Plus Huge New Features
In a move to shamelessly match Google’s highly-aggressive Drive storage pricing, cloud drive favorite Dropbox has finally lowered the pricing and upped the storage of its Pro plans on a massive scale: the company is now offering 1TB of storage for $9.99 a month. That’s the same price you’ll pay for Google Drive, and even less if you opt for the annual subscription, at $99 per year (17% savings).
That’s just getting you to put your wallet on the table, though – Dropbox isn’t done yet. Today’s announcement isn’t just about more space and less money, there are huge new features coming to Dropbox Pro subscribers.
- Passwords for shared links create an additional layer of security so only people with the password can access your link.
- Expirations for shared links safeguard your sensitive files by letting you set how long your links stay up.
- View-only permissions for shared folders let you pick whether recipients can edit or just view files within your shared folder.
This is, frankly, the kind of stuff that will have competing services shaking in their boots – these features are game-changers in a space where most cloud storage providers are still fairly basic in permissions management. Dropbox Pro is also adding remote wipe capabilities, allowing you to delete locally saved Dropbox files from a lost or stolen device.
The new pricing and features announced today seem to confirm that Dropbox will remain cloud storage king for at least a while yet – I know I’m signing up for Pro today.
