[Bonus Round] Pumped BMX 2, Checkpoint Champion, And Cubic Castles

Welcome to the latest entry in our Bonus Round series, wherein we tell you all about the new Android games of the day that we couldn’t get to during our regular news rounds. Consider this a quick update for the dedicated gamers who can’t wait for our bi-weekly roundups, and don’t want to wade through a whole day’s worth of news just to get their pixelated fix. Today we’ve got an impressive BMX game, a tricky top-down driver, and a collaborative 3D platformer. Without further ado:

Pumped BMX 2

This game uses a 2D racing setup that will be familiar to Trials players, but the focus is on tricks, not time. In that sense it’s more like a mobile-friendly Pro Skater, and may I say, one that isn’t diminished by a kid-friendly presentation. 3D graphics and 2D environments show appealing design and restraint, even while the stages themselves get more and more crazy and challenging. Pumped BMX 2 has support for Google Play Game Services, and it’s a very reasonable $3 with no in-app purchases.

Ride your way through increasingly challenging levels while pulling off crazy trick combinations. 16 authentic BMX tricks can be combined with flips, spins, grinds and manuals for almost unlimited creativity. Includes a totally redesigned tutorial system so in just a few minutes anyone can be shredding like a pro. Throw down your best moves to beat all 500 challenges or kick back and chill. It’s up to you.

Checkpoint Champion

Checkpoint Champion is clearly going for a dirt rally/drifting feel, but it actually reminds me more of barrel racing. (For you city folk: that’s with horses.) The goal is to spin around the dusty landscape grabbing markers and seed boosts for as long as you can, with each stage representing only a bite-sized challenge. The game is free, with small and reasonable in-app purchases for cars, not currency.

Put your driving skills to the ultimate test in a series of fiendish 10-second challenges. You’ll need technique and tenacity as you hit and weave through checkpoints on road, dirt, water, grass and mud. Choose between grip and speed as you drift between obstacles, spin around hairpin turns and turbo your way to victory. The challenges may be small, but only the most dedicated drivers will triumph.

Cubic Castles

Cubic Castles is about halfway between Minecraft and Little Big Planet. If that doesn’t make any sense to you, then it’s a collaborative online game where players make simple (or indeed, complex) platforming structures to play around with. It’s got the 3D movement and resource gathering of Minecraft with the adorable, customizable avatars and third-person perspective of Little Big Planet. The game has in-app purchases, but without the competitive atmosphere of a player-versus-player setup, they shouldn’t spoil things.

Build awesome 3D platform worlds with your friends. Cubic Castles is an online game where you build worlds from cubes and other items. What kind of worlds? Anything you want. Role playing, 3D-platform gaming, or other challenges. What you make is up to you. Want to make a punishing parkour with slippery ice and deadly spikes? No problem. Or maybe a simple house on a hill overlooking a lake? That’s easy too.
